Clients often say to me ‘I am depressed’ ‘How do I get over it?’ Typical treatment for depression focuses on returning them to a time when they didn’t feel like this. Medication is often used with counselling to examine what might have caused the depression. When clients tell me about their lives I often say ‘Who wouldn’t be depressed?’ They are baffled by this, since I am suggesting that something about their lifestyle contributes to their depression.
Within each problem lies the solution!
If you are depressed, don’t rush to remove the presumed object of the depression – instead, use it as a useful barometer of “what is” or “is not” working in your life. Depression often arises out of anxiety – another indicator of what is not working in your life. If left unexamined, a part of you will shout louder until you listen.
‘To depress’ means to ‘hold down’ – where are you held down in your life?
In your vision, aspirations, relationships, goals? Do others expectations of you impose too great a strain and yet you don’t feel you have a choice to negotiate on this? Don’t allow depression to speak for you and immobilise you. Seek assistance in examining what exactly your depression is trying to tell you. If you don’t, it could become chronic depression – which removes you from choosing how to change your life.

It can be very difficult to feel so alone and feel that no-one cares or understands how difficult it is to be depressed. Remember is that ‘What you think is what will become your reality’. So if you believe that ‘no-one cares or understands’ that is what happens. Then as this becomes your experience, it reinforces your belief that the world is like this. ‘We do not see the world as it is – we see the world as we are’.
