Depression can be a debilitating experience rendering the sufferer feeling powerless to change. However, beliefs about causes of depression influence directly solutions sought to overcome it. If you believe changes in your body chemistry are to blame, you will seek out medical advice and medication. Believing recent or previous experiences are to blame, you will seek ways to work through or remove those associations. If you believe that despite life’s challenges, your depression is telling you something bigger about how you life your life or how you find meaning, a different perspective will be taken.
Whatever your beliefs – and these affect psychologists and their approaches too – it is my experience that the latter usually arises in my clients’ journeys. Depression, despite its enormously debilitating and painful effects can be a friend, imploring you to ask bigger questions about your life and what you want it to be about.
